UPDATE: What is Fort Wayne’s Anchor vote really about?
Fort Wayne City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on the proposed 24-hour, low-barrier Anchor Resource Center at 333 East Washington Boulevard. Councilman Russ Jehl told WOWO that a recent visit to Lafayette sharpened his concerns about putting the facility in the downtown business district and about the project’s cost.
Jehl said Lafayette intentionally located its center outside downtown, while Fort Wayne’s proposal would put the facility in the central business district. The vote is the next decision point after months of debate over location, funding and operations.

Show angle: A Tuesday vote should answer not only whether the project moves forward, but what safeguards and price tag taxpayers are actually approving.
Why did Fort Wayne gas fall 16 cents?
The average price for regular gasoline in Fort Wayne fell more than 16 cents per gallon over the past week, to $3.32, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations. Sunday’s cheapest station was $3.19 and the most expensive was $3.51, a 32-cent spread.
The local average is 35.3 cents below a month ago and 2.8 cents below a year ago. Across Indiana, Sunday prices ranged from $2.89 to $4.19 per gallon.

Show angle: A falling average is good news, but the station-by-station spread is a reminder that where you fill up still matters.
What is planned for Allen County’s Safety Fair?
The 18th annual Allen County Safety Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Safety Academy in Fort Wayne. WOWO reports the free event will give children and families a chance to learn about safety and emergency preparedness.
The event is open to the public, with the emphasis on practical preparedness rather than a ticketed festival. It is an early notice for families planning September weekends.

Show angle: Public-safety education is most useful when families leave with specific skills, contacts and a plan they can use before an emergency.
UPDATE: What happened in the fiery I-69 crash involving a Fort Wayne man?
Indiana State Police said a Columbia City couple, Timothy and Carol Graham, both 77, were killed Saturday morning in a fiery crash on I-69 in Greene County. A 29-year-old Fort Wayne construction worker was seriously injured and flown to Indianapolis after a truck struck an unoccupied epoxy-application semi.
The crash sparked a fire and epoxy spill, struck a bridge and closed I-69 in both directions for more than eight hours. The item is adjacent spillover, but it involves Whitley County-area residents and a Fort Wayne worker.

Show angle: The public deserves a clear account of highway hazards, contractor protections and why the closure lasted through the response.

What will the State Road 2 study ask South Bend residents?
The ProPEL study team announced a second round of community office hours on Sept. 10 to gather input on safety, traffic, growth and mobility along the State Road 2 corridor in LaPorte and St. Joseph counties. The South Bend session runs 1–3 p.m. Eastern at the St. Joseph County Library’s Western Branch, 611 South Lombardy Drive.
A separate LaPorte County session is scheduled the same day from 4–6 p.m. Eastern at the Rolling Prairie Branch library. The study team is seeking feedback from residents and business owners before future corridor decisions.

Show angle: Public input only matters if INDOT shows which safety and congestion complaints changed the plan afterward.
How did a South Bend house fire end?
Firefighters responded just before 5:30 a.m. Monday to a house fire in the 54,000 block of 26th Street, off State Road 23. WSBT reported that homeowners called after seeing the back deck on fire, everyone escaped safely and no injuries were reported.
Crews stayed to handle hot spots after the main fire was out. The cause was not established in the early account.

Show angle: The immediate good news is that everyone got out; the follow-up question is what investigators learn about the fire’s origin and spread.

What is coming to Goshen for River Bend?
The River Bend Film Festival returns to Goshen from Sept. 3–5, according to festival director Neil King’s Monday appearance on ABC57. The festival will bring screenings and film programming back to Elkhart County later this week.
The announcement gives residents a local cultural event to watch as the summer calendar turns toward fall. Festival information and the 2026 schedule are available through the event organizers.

Show angle: A local festival earns staying power when it brings visitors into downtown businesses as well as filling seats.

Can Michigan’s local governments do more together?
Michigan’s counties, cities, townships and villages collectively spend more than $30 billion a year, including about $1.7 billion in state revenue sharing, according to an MLive report. The article examines whether regional cooperation can help local governments deliver more with the money already moving through the system.
The discussion is relevant to Berrien County’s many separate municipalities and to Southwest Michigan groups working across jurisdictional lines. It is a policy question, not a claim that every local government should be merged.

Show angle: Before asking residents for another millage, officials should show what shared purchasing, services or planning could save first.
Why are Michigan gas prices still volatile?
Michigan’s average regular-gas price was about $4.15 per gallon Monday, according to AAA data cited by MLive, compared with $3.31 a year earlier. The report says prices have moved sharply over the past six months as international events and expectations about a resolution changed week to week.
The national average was about $4.08, while Michigan diesel averaged $5.58. Prices vary widely by county, so the statewide figure is a benchmark rather than a quote for every Berrien County station.

Show angle: Drivers can see the price at the pump, but the policy question is how much volatility families and small businesses can absorb.

Where are Braun and FEMA checking storm damage?
Gov. Mike Braun, FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton and Indiana Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham are assessing storm-recovery sites across the state Monday. The announced stops include Carmel at 10 a.m. Eastern and Gary at noon Central, with media availabilities and a livestream planned.
The visits are part of the state’s continuing damage assessment and recovery work after severe storms and flooding. Indiana says FEMA assistance is available in impacted counties while officials evaluate whether additional areas should be added.

Show angle: A tour is useful only if it produces specific commitments, deadlines and a public accounting of which counties receive help.
How much private money is going to Indiana flood recovery?
UnitedHealthcare is committing $80,000 to Indiana communities recovering from flooding and severe storms. WOWO reports the money will support emergency food, shelter, recovery supplies, direct financial assistance and longer-term recovery through groups including the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, the American Red Cross Indiana Region and several community foundations.
The company also says its teams are helping residents connect with available resources. The donation supplements, rather than replaces, public disaster assistance and local fundraising.

Show angle: Every dollar helps after a disaster, but the public still needs a transparent list of unmet needs and where the money went.
